It's fall!!, but against all odds, we've got a late crop of those little watermelon coming in. Most of them aren't quite as sweet as they were during the warmer weather, but we are still happy to have them.
Other items include arugula, dill, beets, kale, radish, lettuce, cucumbers, cabbage, eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, and some of our favorite fall crops--- Winter Squash! The hard yellow oval ones are called Delicatta. They have sweet moist flesh. Many people leave their thin skin on and just eat it. The round orange ones that look like pumpkins are called Sunshine. They have a drier creamy sweet flesh. There are a lot of great ways to prepare winter squash..... In general, the drier ones mash up nicely, and are also good in soups/stews, especially for curry dishes. You can boil/steam winter squash on stove top or in a covered pan in the oven. Add in chunks of potatoes and cook together, adding steamed kale, onions, whatever you like. Dress with a lemon/ tahini sauce, or Worcestershire sauce, etc. Healthy and delicious. Or cut the squash in half and scoop out the seed cavity. You can bake it upside down in the pan, so that it steams itself; or place it right side up with some butter/oil inside, covered in foil if you want it to be less dry. Some people add spices or maple syrup in with the butter/oil. Be careful not to overcook the Delicatta; it's thin flesh cooks in about half the time as some of the other larger winter squash do. If you can stick a fork through it, it's done. Also, you can cut winter squash into 1/2 inch or so slices, and saute or grill them. As always, it's what you make it. Enjoy! 2011-2012 Fall/Spring CSA ---shares now available

We expect a sell out! go to our Join Our CSA page for more info This week's share consists of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, peppers, garlic, chard and braising greens, lettuce, and Acorn Winter Squash! The braising greens are spicy, but some people do like them raw in salads. Most often, they are sautéed. Coming soon: string beans! see pics below... Fruit Share Update We hope you've been enjoying the fruit shares so far. The apples will be coming along in full force very soon. The size, number and volume of fruit shares is variable from week to week dependent upon the type, size, and weight of the fruit. We try to reach the average 1/2 peck or peck weight which 5 and 10#s of fruit. So the number of pieces will vary when the fruit is large and heavy, and it is complicated even more because we are mixing different types of fruit! Regardless, you can be sure that we pack your shares so you are getting a greater value than the cost of the share. Enjoy! This week's share contains tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, eggplant, onions, arugula, fennel (smells like black licorice), radish, cucumbers, and collards. The collards are the big flat green leaves. They are good sautéed and in stews. You can also use them as a wrap, filled with rice or whatever.
After 3 seasons without much deer damage, they have caught up with us this year. We've lost a bunch of melons and lettuce and sweet potatoes. Most significantly, the deer have obliterated 3 of our carrot plantings- a total of over 4000 row feet. This is why you haven't seen carrots in your shares. As you can see in the pictures below, we have not given up! We seeded a 5th planting of carrots and put up a few solar powered electric fences. So you should be seeing carrots again towards the end of the season. |
